KEY POINTS:
An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the richter scale shook central New Zealand early today.
The quake, at 1.25am, was located 20km east of Nelson at a focal depth of 90km.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
It was one of three quakes overnight. At 5.45am an earthquake occurred 30km north-west of Murchison. It measured 4.1 on the richter scale with a focal depth of 5km.
A third earthquake struck 10km south-west of New Plymouth at 6.43am. Measuring 4.2 on the richter scale, the earthquake had a focal depth of 10km and was felt in the Taranaki area.
