Three people transported to hospital following serious head-on collision in north Auckland

A young man has been taken to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition following a head-on collision in Redvale, North Auckland this afternoon.

The incident took place around 4.20pm on East Coast Rd and emergency services were called a short time later.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also called to the incident, getting the call at 4.33pm to assist the male aged in his 20s.

On arrival, the young man was in a critical condition and still trapped inside one of the crashed vehicles, a rescue helicopter spokesman said.

He required the services of the helicopter's prehospital and retrieval medicine doctor.

It was later established the man would be transported to hospital by road ambulance with the Westpac medical crew accompanying him.

Three people in total were injured, a police spokeswoman said earlier this evening. All, including the young male, were transported to hospital.

The incident also resulted in the temporary closure of East Coast Rd but police advise the road had since reopened by 6.45pm.

One of the vehicles involved in the crash was over the double-yellow line centreline with the other parked over the kerb of the road, nearly in a small ditch.

The roof of the vehicle parked over the centrelines had its roof removed.

Several emergency services crew were also snapped on scene, including firefighters, ambulance staff and police officers.

One person could be seen lying down on a gurney.
