KEY POINTS:
Government ministers today opened three new fire stations in the Wellington region.
Prime Minister Helen Clark and Internal Affairs Minister Rick Barker opened new station buildings at Hutt City, Avalon and Seaview - all in Lower Hutt.
Miss Clark said since 1999 the Fire Service had opened 40 new stations buildings and refurbished or relocated a further 15.
The Fire Service is independently funded through a house insurance levy.
