The Navy is heading back to Waitangi in force for next month's 171th commemorations of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi with three ships and a 100-strong honour guard - the biggest presence for many years.
The Anzac frigate, HMNZS Te Kaha, the offshore patrol vessel, HMNZS Otago and the inshore patrol vessel, HMNZS Hawea, the 100-strong honour guard and the navy band are due in Waitangi next week to take part in the commemorations to celebrate the signing of the treaty in 1840.
The last time the navy had such a big presence was in 1994 when Prince Charles visited Waitangi.
The Navy first paraded at Waitangi in 1947.
A naval spokeswoman said that this year the navy planned two ceremonial beat retreat ceremonies, one on Saturday and one on Sunday - Waitangi Day.
