Three men are in hospital this morning after a series of fights in central Hamilton at about 1.30am.
Police said weapons including knives, a chain and a bat were used in the Knox Street brawl, which involved up to twenty people.
Senior Sergeant Graham Shields said it appeared innocent bystanders had become drawn into an ongoing dispute between two groups.
He said a 22-year-old man had been arrested for fighting and assault with a weapon. Further arrests were likely.
Meanwhile a man was seriously ill in Auckland Hospital, after a domestic incident in the early hours of this morning.
Police were called to an inner city apartment just before 4am. His partner was arrested at the scene.
