Three men are in hospital following a fight in south Auckland early today.
They were taken to Middlemore Hospital and one was in "a very serious condition, causing concern", a police northern communications spokesman told NZPA.
The attack happened shortly before 2am in Station Road, Takanini.
Police said they had sealed off the road and were trying to piece together what had happened.
Four people were involved in the assault, following a barbecue and a party at neighbouring houses, Ana-Mari Gates-Bowey, communications officer for Counties Manukau police, said.
"There appears to have been a lot of conflict and we received a call to the address just after 1am," she said.
Police would spend today taking witness statements and carrying out a scene examination.
She said she expected two of the three injured men to be discharged later today.
