KEY POINTS:
Wellington police have arrested three gang members for a vicious assault and robbery in the city centre this week.
Detective Sergeant Warwick McKee said a Wellington man in his mid 20s walking down Cambridge Terrace on Monday about 11.50pm was allegedly attacked by three gang members outside the X Base backpackers.
The men who jumped out of a four-wheeled drive, severely beat the man and stole property including, clothing, bank cards, a media player and cellphone, before driving off northwards.
Police today arrested three men aged 19, 20 and 27, and charged them with aggravated robbery and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, Mr McKee said.
They were due to appear in Wellington District Court this afternoon.
Mr McKee said the men had been arrested after members of the public had provided them with valuable information.
However, police would still like to talk to anyone else who saw the attack.
"Wellington police are committed to keeping the capital safe from violent attacks like these," Mr McKee said.
