A night out playing darts with friends turned to tragedy when a pensioner was hit and killed by a car seconds after she walked out of a west Auckland bar.
Police were called to the scene after the woman, understood to be 73, was hit by a car just after 8pm on Saturday night near the intersection of Great North Rd and West Coast Rd in Glen Eden. An officer from the Waitemata serious crash unit said it was too early to speculate on what had happened.
The Herald has learned that the woman spent time at a bar with friends before she died. It is understood the group had a few drinks and were playing darts.
She was hit as she stepped out to cross the road.
The woman was one of three people killed on New Zealand roads over the weekend, including a 14-year-old boy on a bicycle who was discovered by his family after being hit by a milk tanker.
