KEY POINTS:
Road accidents have claimed the lives of three people in the South Island so far this weekend.
Two people died after their car ran off the road and hit a fence in west Otago early this morning.
Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes said the crash happened between 3am and 6am on State Highway 90, between Crookston and Edievale.
It was not known whether any other vehicles were involved, Mr Raynes said.
Also in the South Island, a 17-year-old woman died after being hit by a car on State Highway 1 north of Blenheim this morning.
Detective Mike Lawson said the woman, who had been drinking, got out of a car at Grovetown, 4km north of Blenheim, and walked on to the road about 1.15am. She was then hit by the car.
The woman was rushed to Blenheim's Wairau Hospital but died soon after. The car driver was treated for minor injuries.
The woman's name had not been released.
