The accident happened on State Highway 1 at Milburn, 51km southwest of Dunedin about 4pm, where a southbound vehicle, towing another vehicle on a trailer, lost control and struck another car coming the other way, said Senior Constable Darren Cox of Balclutha police.
It took emergency services about 20 minutes to cut the three from the vehicles. They suffered moderate to serious injuries and were flown by helicopter to Dunedin, he said.
