Three 'critical' after six-car pile-up

A six car pile-up north of Wellington is reported to have left three people in critical condition.

Emergency services were at the scene of a smash on Hutt Road, Kaiwharawhara, just north of Wellington city.

The crash happened about 11.30am and has closed Hutt Road to traffic from both directions.

Police said it appeared three people might be critically injured - with up to eight people believed to be involved in the crash.

Police serious crash unit was at the scene.
