One person has died and three others are seriously injured in three separate car crashed in the North Island today.
A man has died in a head-on collision on State Highway One, between Russel Rd and Old North Rd, north of Whangarei.
He'd been driving north, when the accident happenedshortly before one this afternoon, trapping him and another woman in another car in the wreckage.
The woman, who'd been in a southbound car, has been transported to Whangarei Hospital with serious injuries. A man who had been travelling with her is uninjured.
A scene examination is underway and the highway is expected to remain closed for another two to three hours.
Earlier this morning another woman was seriously injured, when a ute rolled down a bank, into a tree on a Pakiri Road property in Leigh at around 10:30 this morning.
The woman at the property, north of Auckland, was trapped underneath it when she tried to stop its progress.
She was freed from the wreckage by the fire service and airlifted to Auckland City Hospital with "crush injuries". An Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokeswoman said she was in a serious but stable condition.
