A mother and young child were involved in a crash in North Canterbury this afternoon which left a 19-year-old man in a critical condition.
The three-car crash occurred on State Highway 1 outside the Waikuku Z Service Station about 3.30pm.
Following the crash, a 19-year-old man was flown to Christchurch Hospital in a critical condition and a mother, young child and another teenager were taken to Christchurch Hospital with minor injuries.
Emergency services were working to clear the area and hoped to have SH1 fully open in the next couple of hours, police said.
Investigations into the cause of the crash were ongoing.
