The other firefighters had left at 8.50pm yesterday.
Firefighters also remain on the scene of a fire in Hawkes Bay that broke out 12 hours earlier.
Seven fire trucks, six tankers, and support vehicles were sent to the fire at a commercial building in Awatoto, about 6km south of Napier City Centre, about 2.20am today.
Two fire trucks and a tanker were still at the scene at 2.20pm to dampen down remaining hotspots.
No injuries were reported.
Chris Dalton, central fire communications shift manager, said the Awatoto building was previously used as a commercial paua operation but had been empty for some time.
Meanwhile, a triple-storey residential building and parked car were burned in the Wellington suburb of Tawa last night.
Mr Dalton said he saw the property this morning. "From what I could see it was pretty severely damaged. There's a car in the driveway which was half-burned out as well."
He said the house appeared to comprise two flats and the residents would probably need alternative accommodation.
"In that situation, normally with smoke contamination and water contamination we don't let people stay in those places. They need to either contact their insurance agents and find accommodation that way, or they go and stay with family."
The Fire Service was called to the blaze at 9.55pm yesterday and on arrival found the house well ablaze.
Four fire trucks and a command unit were sent to extinguish the fire in Olivia Crescent.
Mr Dalton understood two people had minor injuries and were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.
Mr Dalton said the causes of both the Hawkes Bay and Tawa fires had not yet established.
