Three people have been arrested in connection to a series of burglaries targeting elderly people in their south Auckland homes.
Two men, aged 32 and 49, and a 32-year-old woman were taken in for questioning after an extensive police investigation into the burglaries, which took place between August and November.
"At least 14 elderly victims were targeted for the burglaries, some of whom have felt so traumatised by the offending that they have had to sell their family home and move on, or are now suffering from anxiety," said Detective Senior Sergeant Darrell Harpur of Counties Manukau police.
Bank cards were stolen in the burglaries, and the victims were later deceived into giving out their PIN numbers over the phone. The thieves then maxed out the cards, or used them until they were cancelled.
"Police would like to remind everyone that under no circumstances are you to supply your PIN number to any person purporting to be from the bank or the police," said Mr Harpur.
"Should you receive such a call, you are advised to ring police immediately."
The criminals mostly targeted the Auckland area, however officers have identified other incidents from Hamilton through to Orewa.
Mr Harpur's team believes there are other victims, and has urged them to come forward. Anyone with information about the burglaries is also asked to contact police.
