The 1000th kiwi born under a national conservation programme is soon to be released back into the wild.
A western brown kiwi named Hupai will be returned to Waimarino Forest near Whanganui National Park, where she was found as an egg, at a ceremony on November 30.
Hupai now has a 65 per cent chance of survival compared with 5 per centif she was left unaided as a chick in the wild.
