Boaties should be hoping they will not need to call on the services of Linda Blakey.
Because if the Northern region's first female coastguard skipper and qualified nurse is contacted it generally means someone is in trouble.
During the summer months, after the winter covers have been pulled off boats in and around Auckland, the coastguard service is in high demand.
Ms Blakey, a six-year coastguard veteran, says far too many callouts are due to a lack of common sense.
"We get called out regularly where people have not checked their fuel, or have drained the boat battery by listening to the radio while fishing."
In some instances, there are too many passengers for the size of the boat; in other cases too much alcohol leads to silly behaviour which can turn dangerous.
"We have had cases where people all of a sudden think it is a good idea to go swimming in their jeans."
She advises boaties:
* Make sure you have communication - a cellphone or, preferably, a two-way radio.
* Tell someone where you are heading and when you are due back.
* Provide lifejackets.
* Check the weather.
