Lomolita Moala was continuing a close allegiance with the Masterton Young Citizen's Boxing Club when he won the intermediate 64kg title at the national amateur boxing championships last weekend.
Moala ,17, is now based in Sydney , where he has won all 10 of his fights, but he fought for the Young Citizens Club when he previously lived in the Hutt Valley and was again under their banner at the nationals, held in Rotorua.
And he also had the benefit of having a former tutor, John Kamo, an assistant trainer at Young Citizens, in his corner.
Kamo was delighted with the manner in which Moala stopped highly-rated Wellington-Hutt Valley boxer George Gardner in round three of his opening bout and then beat Kurt Matiu of Waikato on points (27-6) in the final.
"He just had too much speed and too much power," Kamo said of Moala. "He was one of the stars of the championships, no doubt about that."
Kamo said Moala, who will be looking to win a New South Wales state title within the next week, had all the requirements needed to be top performer in the ring??a lightning fast jab, vicious overhand right and a powerful left and right hook..
"He's fit, he's keen and he's got all the skills, he should go a long way in the sport," he said.
Just who Moala will represent on the international front though is still open to debate.
New Zealand, Australia and Tonga are all eyeing him closely as an outstanding prospect but he is yet to decide which way he will go in that respect.
