Thieves have stolen crucial equipment from a Tauranga man who is kayaking solo around New Zealand.
Tim Taylor, who is 1-1/2 months into his 5500km journey, was camping at All Day Bay in north Otago when thieves stole some of his equipment, including a GPS device, a camera and clothing.
Mr Taylor's mother, Lyn Taylor, said the theft was "really disappointing", especially as the items were sponsored.
The loss of his GPS device was a safety issue as it sent out a continuous signal to satellites to regularly update his position.
The signal was plotted on a Google Earth page which linked to his website so people could view his progress.
However, he still had an emergency locater beacon he could use, she said.
Mr Taylor has continued his voyage, despite the setback, and was paddling towards Karitane, near Dunedin.
He has estimated his journey will take three to six months.
