The high number of firearm thefts in rural Southland and Otago has police worried that rural properties are being targeted.
In the past three months, 33 firearms have been reported stolen in nine burglaries, all from rural properties, said Inspector Lane Todd, southern district operations manager.
Nine rifles have been recovered in recent weeks in Southland and several people were facing charges as a result, he said.
"It is timely to remind rural communities to check general security and, more specifically, firearms security on their properties. It is also crucial to report any suspicious vehicles or people to the local police station."
