KEY POINTS:
Thieves smashed their way into a locked ambulance and stole equipment as it responded to an emergency earlier this week.
Wellington Free Ambulance officials said lives were put at risk by the thieves' actions on Monday.
The ambulance was at the Petone home of a patient after responding to an emergency call-out.
A radio and a mobile data terminal - valued at around $5,000 - was taken and $15,000 worth of damage caused.
James Craw from Wellington Free Ambulance said the equipment was insured, but the damage was simply unnecessary.
