Thieves who stole a car with a baby asleep inside have handed the child to passers by.
The car was parked at the BP station on Weymouth Rd, Weymouth, Auckland, when it was taken at 3.30pm today.
The occupants of the stolen car handed the child to two boys not far from where the car was stolen.
The baby was uninjured and has been returned to the parents, police said.
Officers, who had issued an appeal after the baby was taken, are still looking for the car and its occupants.
The car is a silver Honda Accord, registration UB46, with no distinguishing features, police said.
They are appealing to anyone who sees the car to call them immediately on 111 or star 555.
