Mauriceville School pupils have returned from a "rubbish rampage" around their community with proof there is cash in trash.
Principal Rebecca Stevens said her pupils last week spent a solid hour scouring the Mauriceville village for rubbish as part of Keep New Zealand Beautiful (KNZB) week.
The students were wearing protective gloves and carrying rubbish bags provided by the KNZB charitable trust, she said, which also helps inspire and educate its younger volunteers "who share the passion" for litter abatement, waste minimisation, and town and city beautification across New Zealand.
"As a school we are really concerned about rubbish, especially plastics because last year we did a beach clean up at Castlepoint and had an education session with the sustainable coastlines trust," Ms Stevens said.
"On Friday we sorted the rubbish to see how much of it really is rubbish. It looked at first glance like there was a lot of plastic, glass and metal that could be recycled, and also paper which we will put into our compost.
