A thief with a taste for wine has put in jeopardy top Aussie driver John Bowe's participation in this weekend's Supercar races at Pukekohe.
All the former champion's driving gear including racing suits, helmets and safety equipment were stolen from his car on Wednesday night when it was parked at the Carlton Hotel on the corner of Mayoral Drive and Vincent St in Auckland City.
Racing helmets are specifically designed and fitted for individual drivers and not readily replaced.
"This is shattering for me," said Bowe, who drives for Team BOC. "The thought of not being able to race on the weekend just makes me feel sick inside.
"I really don't care about who took it and how it happened. I just need my gear back. I am happy to provide a reward that would far outweigh the value of the items."
Bowe said the thief's attention had probably been caught by some New Zealand wine he had bought, which was also taken from the car.
The thief was welcome to the wine and the racing gear would be of no use to anyone else, either to use or sell, because it was recognisable.
Bowe asked that the gear be returned to the Carlton Hotel with details of how a reward could be paid.
