Theft at Shears

A burglary at the Golden Shears on Friday night is "really disappointing" and a blow to Masterton's reputation, said the Shears' master of ceremonies Kieran McAnulty.

Cash, laptops and a "top of the range" shearer's grinder was stolen during the break-in at Masterton War Memorial Stadium.

Mr McAnulty said even some prizes and dresses owned by the presentation girls had been taken.

"Someone's identified the Golden Shears as a rare event that fills up the stadium.

"They took their opportunity."

He said it is a "big blow" to Masterton's image.

"This is such an economic event, so good for the region. This town owes the Golden Shears a lot. It runs at a minimal - what it takes in, is what it takes out.

"We really can't afford to have cash stolen, we can't afford silly things like this to happen.

He said the police reacted "really well" and they hope video footage will lead to an arrest.
