His online GPS tracker shows he had just passed Cape Palliser yesterday and his latest Facebook update shows him fishing near Ngawi.
Brando survives on food he hunts or finds, like possums, wild goat and fish, and says if he doesn't find anything, he doesn't eat.
He has even tried eating a weta, which he does not recommend.
As part of the walk, he is raising funds for New Zealand's Ronald McDonald Houses but he also has another purpose.
He had a difficult time in school coping with dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and got into a few scrapes with the law.
But a six-week programme with the NZ Defence Force turned his life around.
He later applied to join the NZ Army but was rejected because of his dyslexia.
This was when he decided to take on the challenge as a way of showing other young people that not everybody has to be academic to achieve some good.
"I always wanted to etch my name in history," he said on TVNZ's Seven Sharp.
His family is supportive of his journey and his dad Todd Yelavich said the experience will give Brando more opportunities.
"I'm calling it his university," he said.
Brando has already exceeded his fundraising goal of $10,000.00, with $11,579.99 raised.
The Times-Age attempted to contact him but was unsuccessful, most likely because he was out of range.
