KEY POINTS:
Diane Franklin and her husband live in a block of four two-storey monolithic clad townhouse/apartments in Tauranga.
Almost 18 months ago, neighbours decided to sell their unit and discovered it had a damp problem, which also affects the Franklins' home.
"If they hadn't wanted to sell we would have been none the wiser as to what has become a nightmare," said Diane.
"We are superannuitants aged 75 and 73 and my husband has dementia.
"Two of the units have been repaired and our unit is next on the list. We have to move out by August 1 and are having great difficulty finding a place to suit my husband's condition."
Diane said they had been turned down for a loan by their bank and were forced to borrow more than $190,000 from Housing New Zealand at 10.45 per cent interest to get their home repaired.
"I don't know how we will repay the loan if we don't get a favourable result from mediation," she said.
"As we are a body corporate we will put our claims in together."
She said the problem had been "terribly stressful" for her and the other residents.
"And it is not our fault. The Government certainly is answerable but will they do anything?"
