Shocked spectators leap out of harm's way after speedway collision

A speedway driver last night suffered a broken back after a horror racing crash in Auckland.

Craig Marsh was injured after his vehicle became airborne and ploughed into a safety fence and poles at Waikaraka Park, Onehunga.

Marsh was taking part in the North Island Super Saloon Championship when his car clipped another competitor.

After the racing tangle, his out-of-control car rode on to the top of the concrete safety barrier for several metres, before rotating and slamming head-on into a metal pole.

Wreckage from his car sprayed into the nearby pits area and on to the track.

The impact of Marsh's car into the wall, and the amount of debris that went flying after it, left onlookers shocked.

Spectators who were standing near by jumped away from the safety fence to avoid being struck.

Racing was halted and track marshals and an ambulance crew rushed on to the circuit to check on the condition of the driver.

Marsh was last night being treated in Auckland City Hospital.

Several hours after the accident the injured driver relayed a message to speedway fans on his official Facebook page, Marsh Motor Sport.

"OK guys. I'm alive. Broken back but still kicking," he wrote.

His posting sparked messages of support from friends and fans. Colin Stuart responded: "All the best for recovery bro. Hope you are ok mate."

In the moments after the crash Marsh was treated by ambulance staff, before being rushed to hospital. An ambulance spokesperson said he had been taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Marsh was one of 27 drivers taking part in the North Island Super Saloons Championship at Waikaraka Park last night.
