KEY POINTS:
When we head out fishing, especially if we are in a new area, the first challenge we face is: where to drop our line?
The latest edition of Spot X Cape to Cape endeavours to make answering that question as simple as flicking to the right page.
This 228-page publication covers the entire coast from Cape Maria van Diemen to East Cape and also includes the popular Three Kings and Ranfurly Banks.
All of the relevant charts for this widely boated area are reproduced, overlaid with symbols showing the best spots to snare a wide variety of fish and shellfish. GPS co-ordinates for all these spots are also included.
The book is a collaborative effort between respected fishing publisher Mark Airey and renowned fishing "guru" Bruce Duncan (who supplies the fishing information and spots for Weekend Marine).
The pair combined their own favourite spots and worked closely with some of New Zealand's most respected charter skippers to ensure as wide a coverage as possible.
This latest Spot X publication is also a detailed cruising guide for the entire Cape to Cape region with information such as the relevant maritime radio VHF channels for each area, Coastguard contacts, weather forecasts, fishing clubs and marina operators' contact details.
Also included for the first time are reviews of the anchorages and ramps in the region, main course lines with distance and bearings and more than 300 additional spots that were not in the first edition.
That first edition was a bestseller and one imagines this edition with its additional spots and loads of new information will prove just as popular. It costs $39.95 and is widely available in bookshops and chandleries.
