Tonight, K Rd and surrounding streets will embrace their inner Southern spirit, getting into New Orleans carnival mode for the latest instalment of First Thursdays. Alongside jazz bands and street performances, local businesses are celebrating, with the likes of Honeytrap in St. Kevin's Arcade dishing up muffuletta sandwiches and Coco's Cantina hosting Mardi Gras happy hour with a Southern style barbecue and tunes to match. Festive December just got bigger. See kroad.com for street map and full programme.

IN BRIEF
• Caterer Alia de Jaltasyrras of The Little Grocer is preparing her delicious Coromandel orange spice-glazed Pokeno hams again this year, with small and large options on offer. Avoid last minute panic and secure your table centrepiece now. $35/kg,
• The burger trend has officially peaked, with Miami Grill set to open on Federal St. Originally a sandwich bar opened in Florida in the 80s, the diner partnered with rapper Pitbull in 2012, rebranding as Miami Grill. It's now set to take on New Zealand, with its first store outside the US opening in December. We like the kitsch neon signing; the food remains to be seen.
• Add $2 to your restaurant bill at more than 300 venues this month and know that you are helping families in need. The likes of Baduzzi, O'Connell Street Bistro and The Engine Room are on board, with proceeds to City Mission food banks around the country. See dineaid.org.nz for participating venues.
