Auckland is now feeling the brunt of the winter storm with chilly temperatures and rain - though the official temperature is more than 6C, the wind chill factor makes it feel like 3C, according to the MetService.
Eleven power outages have been reported around Auckland. It's not clear how many people are affected.
A Herald reader described seeing "white powder/flaky things getting pushed around in the wind" in Auckland earlier today.
He spotted the "mini-snow" in Mt Wellington, he said, but was unable to take a photograph of it.
"You could definitely see powder/flaky things getting blown around and falling amongst the rain," he said.
But MetService meteorologist Ravi Kandula said that was highly unlikely as the city was nowhere near freezing level.
"It was probably sleet rather than slow. It's a little bit being transported down...it would have been snow higher up but it's turned to slush."
Kandula said the weather was tracking as expected.
"Auckland and Coromandel are going to start to ease in a couple of hours, and Northland is going to see continuing showers. It's starting to ease over the upper North Island but the south is going to stay wet for a few hours yet."
Meanwhile, MetService has warned it will get even chillier over Friday night and Saturday morning as low temperatures continue throughout the country.
Swathes of the South Island would dip below freezing tomorrow night and inland areas of the North Island will also hover around 0C, according to MetService forecasts.
Southerners can expect freezing temperatures ranging from a low of -3C in Queenstown and Invercargill, to highs of 3C in Christchurch and Greymouth.
In the North Island temperatures are forecast to range from a chilly 1C in Taupo and Hamilton, with Wellington expecting 6C and Aucklanders waking up to a brisk 5C.
