Wairarapa can expect stern opposition from Wanganui in their senior representative tennis match at Martinborough this weekend.
Wanganui demonstrated their depth of talent when they drew 12-12 in a recent Christie Cup challenge with holders Taranaki and on that basis of that result actually deserve to start favourites on this occasion.
But while Wairarapa selector Steve Hurley concedes a Wanganui team at full strength would take some beating he is confident that Wairarapa will give a good account of themselves.
"We'd like to think we can make a close game of it??the chances are it will go right down to the wire," he said.
The composition of the entire Wairarapa line-up had still to be confirmed at the times these notes were penned but it seemed likely that experienced campaigners Jono Hurley, Matt Spooner, Geoff McKay and Mike Jackson would be their men's section, along with up-and-comer Baden Stevenson.
Hurley, Spooner and Stevenson all play their club tennis in Wellington as do the two leading players in the women's section, Emma Stevenson and Katie Wyeth. Joining those two are likely to be Natasha Robinson, Ashleigh Gane and Bridget Needham
Hurley anticipates the end result depending on the result of the combined doubles which comes at the end of the day and he says the onus will be on the Wairarapa men to take control in that department.
