Police who stopped a car in Whakatane this week because the driver looked far too young found a 10-year-old boy at the wheel.
Sergeant Ray Wylie said that the boy was being given a driving lesson by his father. The car also did not have registration plates.
Mr Wylie said the man had placed himself, his son, and other road users in danger.
The man was given a $400 on-the-spot fine and the matter was referred to youth aid.
