A specially created one-lane route's opened up to allow motorists through the Waioeka Gorge.
The temporary diversion has been created after a massive slip blocked the entire route at the beginning of March.
Bay of Plenty state highway manager Brett Gliddon said an onsite geological safety assessment undertaken today confirmed that the slope had not moved overnight and the temporary route was suitable to travel on.
He said the temporary diversion was a significant move to getting access through the gorge reestablished.
However Mr Gliddon is warning motorists to still expect delays as the road will have a 30km an hour speed restriction.
