Catherine Gibson has been appointed as interim chair of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority for a three month period.
The announcement followed the resignation of Professor Graeme Fraser last week following a critical report.
Associate Minister of Education David Benson-Pope said it was important the NZQA addressed issues as quickly as possible.
Ms Gibson is a current board member of NZQA, and has wide experience of senior public service management.
The authority's chief executive Karen Van Rooyen remain under pressure.
