KEY POINTS:
Tens of thousands of homes were plunged into darkness last night after an explosion at a substation caused a power cut that crippled Auckland's North Shore.
Today supplies were lost to parts of Papakura, south Auckland. How did the power cuts affect you?

I was teaching a class of Korean adults at a church in Glenfield, and three classes in the Korean church continued throughout the powercut, as the church had battery-powered emergency lights in the hallways. I was teaching on the evidence for the miracles of Jesus Christ, in particular looking at the evidence for Jesus' resurrection from the dead. Interesting for me to reflect now after the powercut on the tremendous, awesome power of God (demonstrated in the created universe and in miracles of God).

Just had a power outage here at Accent Drive in East Tamaki for over an hour.

I was in the middle of tidying up my teenage son's room and doing my housework, changing bed sheets, dirty clothings and bed sheets, polisher, vacuumer and water bucket were all over the floor everywhere. soup was cooking in the pot.
When the darkness came, I was in a mess, couldn't even walk and kept kicking the mess on the floor.it's so dangerous that I had to leave the house and got into the car and drove to Forrest Hill hoping
to borrow a candle. friend was not in, I drove to
Greenlane from Glenfield to borrow a torch. It's very inconvenient and luckily the soup I was cooking didn't get burned.

I don't really understand why this is a national news headline. It's a power cut - they happen. Get over it.

We'd just had a heat pump installed, after pondering whether to go with a wood burner or gas heater, and were enjoying the warmth last night when-phttt, off it went. I immediately thought, if this is an indication of our electricity supply we've made the wrong choice.

My children were performing in the Northern Bay's Cluster Schools Performing Arts Festival in the Westlake Boys High School Auditorium in Forrest Hill near the sub station, when the power went out. The hall switched to a back up generator but because the school didn't know how long the generator would last, we all had to be evacuated and leave the building. If the generator failed,we would have been plunged into darkness and there was a possibility that a panic would ensue and cause a stampeade. There was about 1-200 people including children in the hall. Everyone left without any problem but the children were scared on our walk back to the car. Most motorists were quite considerate at the traffic lights, but it was surreal on the northern motorway.

Yesterday morning an 'unmanned' car ploughed into a power box and through a residents fence in Hale Crescent, Bayview, Glenfield, instantly cutting power. The area has suffered power cuts ever since and linemen were working on the box all through the night with power coming on for short bursts. Whether this has caused any of the other power problems I do not know.

We had to have a committee meeting last night with no power - no big problem. After discovering that all our homes were without power as well, we found a small torch and continued by torch light, aided with the light of a few cellphones.

We at Mairangi are always the first to lose power when something like this happens. Fortunately we knew nothing about the problem until we heard about it on the news. It was an uninterrupted night for us.
