KEY POINTS:
Telecom is now considering compensation for internet customers who lost access to their email at the weekend.
Some users continue to be plagued by problems, but those affected solely by the publicised outage to webmail will not be eligible, because Telecom says it repeatedly tried to notify people beforehand.
Thousands of Xtra customers have been affected by email problems which began with the introduction of the lauded new Yahoo!Xtra Bubble service for more than 500,000 clients.
Customers found themselves unable to send or receive email, bombarded with spam and spending hours trying to reach the Xtra helpdesk.
"Our first priority is obviously to get people up and running," said Telecom head of consumer propositions, Adrian Littlewood.
"We don't know what the formal shape of any compensation might take, but we are still in the midst of just making things work. We will look at any reasonable option where it is relevant for customers."
The company believes it has sorted out most of the problems, including a fault affecting registration to Bubble, yet frustrated customers who contacted the Herald yesterday were still without their email.
David de Villiers, who runs his boat design business from his Auckland home, is sure he has lost work because his email has been down since Saturday.
He finally got some access yesterday but thinks all his emails since Saturday have been lost.
He is not confident he will get any compensation.
"I don't believe [Telecom] has been straight up. Even though it will be a huge upheaval, I am considering packing up and going to another service provider."
Bill Jamieson, of Kohimarama, said his email had also been down since Saturday.
He was receiving occasional emails but still could not send anything out.
"The helpdesk is absolutely useless. They say there are instructions on the website, but they are of no use to me."
Mr Littlewood said some customers had email "issues".
"We are working through those with customers right now.
"There's not necessarily just one issue - it's kind of individual settings, things that we need to work with people to get right."
