Problems with Telecom's' Xtra internet service have been fixed, an Xtra spokesman said today.
Thousands of broadband internet users throughout the country were left without a connection over the past two days as a result of equipment failure.
Telecom Xtra spokesman Sean Martin said the cause of the problem was a faulty proxy server.
It was hard to determine how many people had been affected but "it was certainly in the thousands and it was scattered throughout the country".
Though Telecom said the problem was fixed, one Xtra customer told nzherald.co.nz he was still unable to get internet access this morning.
Rander Zeilstra said he had been attempting to get online using his wireless connection without success.
Mr Martin said Telecom apologised to the affected customers.
He said there were no plans to refund customers for the lost service "at this stage".
