Police have not decided whether three teenagers will be charged after shots were fired at letter boxes on a Wanganui street late last night.
The shots were fired from a rifle and a shotgun on Rapanui Road, at about 11.45pm.
Police were given a description of an old car with a noisy exhaust, and found the teens travelling in a car matching that description a short time later.
The three youths, two aged 16 and one aged 15, were arrested on firearms charges and would be referred to Youth Aid, Sergeant Drew Allison said. They have been returned to their families.
"The boys have been referred to Youth Aid on firearms offences, but it is still too early to say whether they will be charged at a later stage," he said.
Mr Allison said the guns came from one of the boys' families, but he refused to comment further.
The four letter boxes targeted would need to be replaced.
