Two boys are in hospital with serious injuries after a police chase across Auckland.
Senior Sergeant Lance Gardiner said the chase began when police came across three boys aged between 14 and 15 years in a car on Epsom's Market Rd.
He said a police chase began at about 2.15am but said it was believed to have ended before the car crashed in Parnell.
"My understanding is that police were not pursuing the car. The pursuit had been abandoned," Mr Gardiner said.
He said it is believed the three boys had run away from a Child Youth and Family institution.
St John Ambulance team leader John Takerei said ambulance staff arrived at the intersection of York St and Parnell Rd at about 2.45am.
He said two boys were transported to Auckland Hospital and had serious injuries that are not life threatening.
The third boy was uninjured.
