Four Blenheim teenagers arrested after a police car was bombarded with missiles while chasing a stolen car for 200km through the South Island have appeared in court.
Three youths, aged 15 and 16, were remanded in custody yesterday after appearing in Christchurch Youth Court charged with unlawfully entering a motor vehicle. An 18-year-old was also remanded after appearing in Christchurch District Court, the Marlborough Express reported.
Police said a stolen Mitsubishi station wagon failed to stop in Main St, Blenheim, at 11.40pm on Tuesday.
They said a car jack, a headrest, bottles of beer and a glove box were thrown at a police car during the 200km pursuit south on State Highway 1 from Blenheim.
The car was eventually stopped using road spikes on the Hurunui Bridge in north Canterbury early Wednesday morning.
The driver tried to run off but was chased and caught by a police dog.
In the youth court Judge John Strettell said the teens should be kept in custody until transport back to Blenheim could be arranged.
"I don't want to let them loose on the streets of Christchurch," he said.
All three will appear in the Blenheim Youth Court on October 5, where they are likely to face further charges.
