About 3.18am today, police tried to stop a car on Dominion Rd, Mt Roskill, but the driver sped away and another vehicle which “appeared to be travelling in tandem with [it]” followed, a police spokeswoman said.
“The Police Eagle helicopter has continued to track both vehicles and provided commentary, guiding staff in to locate the occupants of one vehicle as they decamped,” Auckland City West acting area commander Inspector Wayne Kitcher said.
“The driver of the vehicle was also observed by Eagle doing multiple burnouts, including at intersections,” Kitcher said.
“This type of driving behaviour not only puts the occupants of the vehicle in danger but also puts other members of the public at risk.”
Police spotted the other car in Mt Roskill later and tried to approach.
The car started slowing down before speeding away onto the Southwestern Motorway in Mt Roskill.
“The vehicle eventually stopped, after being spiked twice, on the Southern Motorway near Rosehill,” Kitcher said.
“The two occupants have attempted to escape on foot but were caught by staff.
“I would like to commend this excellent work by staff who managed to chase the offenders down on foot.
“They were both taken into custody without further incident.”
