A teenager has been left traumatised after she was abducted last night.
The 16-year-old was walking along Ellis St in Brightwater, 21km southwest of Nelson, with headphones in her ears last night and did not hear her attacker's car pull up behind her, police said.
She was pulled into the back seat and driven to a nearby road where he attempted to assault her.
Although she managed to fight the man off, the teenager was "very distressed", said Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne McCoy, of Nelson CIB.
"The offender is not known to the victim, which is very disturbing. It would seem to be a random attack."
Mr McCoy said the investigation team did not yet have a description of the attacker but were hoping DNA taken from the girl's clothing would help to identify him.
