A teenager was killed when the car in which she was a front-seat passenger hit a concrete power pole on the Coatesville-Riverhead Highway, north of Auckland.
Samantha Marie Sinclair, 17, a student of Northcote, died at the scene while the 18- year-old male driver was taken to North Shore Hospital suffering moderate injuries.
Waitemata serious crash unit senior constable Colin Nuttall said the 2002 Nissan Skyline sedan had lost control on a moderate left bend on a slight rise before hitting the pole about 10pm on Friday.
"The road was damp but it wasn't raining at the time," he said.
It appeared Sinclair had not been wearing a seatbelt. The driver was tested for alcohol at the scene but had not been drinking.
