A 16-year-old described as "irate" fired five shots into the air during an armed police call-out yesterday, officers said.
The boy was apprehended at a farm near Marton with the help of police dogs.
An area near the town was cordoned off between 11.55am and 2.45pm as the Armed Offenders Squad tried to calm the teenager, who was allegedly armed with a shotgun.
Wanganui Senior Sergeant Mark Chillingworth confirmed the shots were not fired by police.
The 16-year-old will now be referred to youth aid, facing a number of firearm offences.
