KEY POINTS:
A vicious sexual assault in Wellington last night has left a teenage girl terrified and distraught.
Police say the girl was approached by a man at around 10pm at the Holy Cross Primary School in Miramar.
Detective Craig Vining says after a brief struggle she fought him off, but the offender, aged about 17, tracked her down.
He says she was then subjected to a sustained and brutal sexual attack. Mr Vining says the victim managed to fight him off and make her way to safety.
It is thought the man was involved in an unrelated fight close to the school shortly before the attack.
