A teenage girl has serious injuries after she was stabbed early today.
The 14-year-old victim was rushed to Middlemore Hospital in Auckland with serious stab wounds after an incident at Wiri in southwest Auckland, a St John Ambulance spokesman told NZPA.
As they raced to the scene shortly after 4am today, ambulance officers were told the offender had left the scene but few other details of the incident were available.
Police said the girl's injuries were "very serious".
Detective Sergeant Richard Middleton said the girl had multiple stab wounds and was found in the garden by her mother about 3am. She may have been stabbed after 1am.
He said there was no sign of an offender and police did not know who they were looking for, or if there was a history between the offender and the victim.
"We are looking for an offender. It is not one of those cases where we are not seeking anybody else."
However, he said they had no idea of who the offender was or a description.
"We have nothing at the moment. All we have got is a girl suffering from multiple stab wounds found in the back yard by her mum."
Mr Middleton said the victim was Vietnamese and police were having some difficulty communicating with her mother.
The girl was found at a house near the Wiri township.
