A teenage tramper who slipped on a rock in a remote Canterbury canyon has been winched to safety by a helicopter in a daring rescue.
The 15-year old boy, from Hororata, was walking along a track at Sharplin Falls, by Staveley in Mid Canterbury, yesterday when he fell and injured an ankle and wrist.
An initial ambulance road crew was sent in but they were unable to get the teen out of the river and canyon.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called in and they managed to use a 50m winch to retrieve him at about 8pm.
He was treated by St John/Westpac Rescue paramedics and flown to Christchurch Hospital.
