KEY POINTS:
A teenage construction worker who was crushed by a concrete slab at Fonterra's Edendale dairy factory yesterday remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
Eighteen-year-old Callum Shaw was working in a trench at the factory, 27km southwest of Gore, when a slab believed to weigh more than a tonne fell on him about 11.30am, Sergeant Ian Temple of Gore police said.
A digger was quickly able to lift the slab off him before emergency services arrived.
Mr Temple said he understood Mr Shaw suffered crushing injuries to his chest.
He was in a stable condition at Southland Hospital's critical care ward, a Southland Hospital spokeswoman said.
An investigation was under way and Fonterra and the contractor's employer would be providing information to the Department of Labour in the process, a Fonterra spokeswoman said.
