An 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted while she was walking near central Wellington, police say.
The attack happened on Buckle Street near the National War Memorial about 1.30am on Sunday, Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Ferguson said.
A scene examination was done in the area and several items had been seized.
"This assault has been very distressing for the victim and we are offering her support. Police want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time or seen anyone acting suspicious in the area," Mr Ferguson said.
CCTV footage from the area was being reviewed and police had increased foot patrols.
